South Carolina Surgical is all set to follow new procedures to protect people against strokes. The new method is claimed to be less invasive than provides society a way to ward off diseases. Stroke is one of the major issues causing deaths in the State.

Transcarotid artery revascularization, or TCAR method was described by one of the doctors, Dr. Dion Franga, in South Carolina Surgicals. But at he most he emphasized that the patients should take the early warnings seriously. Realizing that you are at a risk of stroke in an ambulance is not going to help.

The Surgical Centre claimed that they are like a stroke-belt in the region with the Regional Medical Center that runs internationally-accredited stroke program. While forcing the importance of individuals alert over the risk factors and warning signs of stroke, Dr. Franga said that the Centre also screen for the risk factors that are not only related to stroke but to peripheral arterial disease and coronary disease as well.

The general surgeon mentioned the importance of TCAR over the two other surgical procedures that are used traditionally in stroke prevention.

The traditionally used procedures involved invasive methods through other body organs. In one, a stent is put into the carotid artery through the groin area. The other method requires an incision on the neck to perform a carotid endarterectomy, or CEA.

The two procedures are aimed to improve the blood flow as compared to the one seen through the blood vessels. The incision practice to place stents is to avoid a turbulent amount of blood flow that can further increase the chances of stroke. The stent provides a laminar flow through the blood vessels. Open surgery is designed to do the same procedure of laminar blood flow.

Focusing on TCAR, Dr. Franga explained that it is a newly adopted technique to prevent strokes. It is being practiced since last couple of years only. This is a combination procedure that includes open surgery and stent. He added that the procedure is exceptionally fast. The associated risk factors in the TCAR techniques are low depending upon how the procedure is carried out.

The TCAR method includes use of a stent along with surgical procedures for protecting the brain. Instead of going through any other body parts, TCAR uses direct access to the carotid artery. It is done using an advanced system for temporarily reversing the blood flow during the device delivery.

The procedure also needs an incision but directly above the carotid artery at the collar bone. During the procedure, a vessel loop is placed that is used to control the carotid artery. Since the procedure requires a reversal of blood flow to protect brain, the TCAR devices are designed accordingly.

While explaining the procedure Dr. Franga explained that the key step in the TCAR procedure is to reverse the blood flow through the brain. So, the procedure has low risks of anything that could break-off while performing TCAR. The blood is anyway going in the opposite direction. Blood is moving in a backward direction in the carotid artery that is controlled by the inserted vessel loop.

According to the claims made by Dr. Franga, the TCAR procedure carried out by him on patients has took nearly 20 to 25 minutes to complete. Comparing to traditional open-heart surgeries the time consumed in TCAR procedure is less. The traditional methods took around 45 to 60 minutes to get done. The time taken by the femoral stenting, the procedure involving placing a stent through the groin area, is variable. Depending upon if the stent is moving easily or smoothly or is encountering a lot of hurdles to navigate through, the time in femoral stenting has a wide range.Â
